There are specific moments in a person’s life when the light bulb goes off, a huge smile breaks out and a whispered “Ah Ha” is uttered.  In this business, you hope to have more of those moments sooner rather than later.  For me, unfortunately, it took years.

I was talking to my better half last night about how far our business has come and some of the absolutely insane, moronic, pig headed, dumbass choices we have made while we have been a part of this industry.

Still thinking about it this morning, I figured that admitting to them in this post would help someone else avoid my same mistakes.

So here is my Tonight Show David Letterman style Top 10 List of the worst MLM mistakes I have made.

Ladies and Gentlemen here is tonight’s top 10 list…

Spending hours, days, weeks learning everything there is to know about my company’s products.  Knowing the exact ingredients in our shampoo did not make me a millionaire.

Stop wasting your time pouring over the latest DVDs, PDFs, CDs and whatever else your company is cramming down your throat.  The only thing you are doing by being a product know it all is proving that this is hard work for the next person you introduce this to!  They want to know they can do this too and memorizing a fact sheet word for word is not everyone’s strong suit.

Penning the infamous Friends and Family List. And worse, actually thinking that I could find an uncle on my mother’s side twice removed or cousin of a friend of my babysitter’s when I was six to first listen to what I had to say and then join me.

These people are not qualified or interested in your business!  Plus, you don’t have the skills when you first start to explain it anyway.  Get in front of people who are actively looking for what you have to offer, those are the ‘right’ people to talk to.

Marketing a company replicated site.  WOW- this was a BIG one and I did this for a really long time.  DUMB!

Company replicated sites promote one thing- the company!  Not what you offer as a leader, what makes you stand out from the crowd, why you are different than anyone else in your company and how you are going to help the person looking at the site make this business work.

Replicated sites- STINK!

Pitching and selling to anyone within earshot.  If you had a pulse and got within 3 feet of me, I had just what you needed and wasn’t afraid to tell you all about it while your ice cream melted in your grocery cart.

Again, these people are either not qualified or not interested in what you have to offer.  Plus- you know nothing about them and their needs.  How are you supposed to say the exact right thing to a person you just met waiting to pay for a latte?  Don’t open your mouth about what you have to offer until you understand if the other person needs it or not first!

Begging people to join the business.  “Please oh pleeeeease with sugar on top join me????  It’s really fun and great and I need you to get in and we’ll make loads of money and well, pleeease?”

Not sure this one needs much explanation.  When you do desperate things, you get desperate results.  No one wants to join someone begging them to get involved.  Could you see Oprah begging people to watch her show?  Or Martha to buy her new sheet set?  Or Donald Trump to get someone in a real estate deal with them?  Act like a leader and you will attract the right people, beg and you will get scraps.

Buying products for people to get them into the business.  “If you sign this, I’ll buy your products for you…”  I know, this smells of desperation!

If someone isn’t willing to fork out the measly amount it costs to start their own MLM business, do you really think they understand the potential of what is in front of them and will take advantage of it?  Do you think they have what it takes to win when 97% of people fail?

Joining too many lists and getting information overload.  When I finally did clue in that my F & F list was not going to pan out, I scoured the web for any info I could get my hands on online.  In my quest I joined list after list from every “guru” out there and ended up with an inbox full of spam and product pitches, no time left and the need for glasses from the endless reading.

Learning is VERY IMPORTANT! Listening to sales pitches on the latest- greatest thing, system, tool, training is not!  Get on lists that increase your knowledge.  Those are the kind of people to follow and learn from.  If it’s all about ‘buy this now…’  get off that lists and get off fast!  They will suck the life out of your business and you will waste countless hours sifting through the junk mail.

Putting faith in systems and joining everyone of them looking for the magic bullet to make the business easy and work.  I am so amazed at how much time I wasted trying to find the one system that did the work for me.  It’s sad really.  I wish someone would have told me to suck it up, stop spending money on crap and start working!

Let me make this really clear- THERE IS NO PERFECT SYSTEM!  Anyone telling you that theirs is- is trying to sell you a pipe dream.  This is about finding the best system you can and working hard for your results.  You want it easy, then you better start buying a whole lot of lottery tickets!

Building a list for other people and the company itself instead of my own.  The old “We’ve got a built in autoresponder service for you to use in our system…  We capture your leads for you…”  was a simple play to get me to build a list for the system owner or the company I was part of instead of figuring out what I wanted to say and start my own list.  Thousands of hours spent at the computer so that someone else could market their products endlessly to the leads I generated.

Your list is gold… but it’s up to you to build your own.  Get a lead capture form and build your own list.  Then it’s yours, you own it and can market whatever you want to the people on it.

Only marketing my primary business opportunity instead of building a sales funnel.  This was definitely the fastest way to go broke and I did it for years.  As I write this, I wonder why my husband kept me around in those days- must have been my winning personality because it wasn’t the income I was bringing in for the family.

Combine that lead capture form with some outstanding affiliate offers, training and information that will help promote yourself as a leader, bring you upfront sales and will fund your marketing efforts and your primary business.  It is the secret to not going broke in this industry.

Remember, we had to get past these mistakes to get where we are today and I would love to save you a lot of time, money and effort.

Don’t make the same ones I did!

Step 2:  Funded Proposal and Form

A funded proposal is usually generic information in the form of ebooks, training, videos, daily or weekly email series.

It is an offer that the people in your niche can’t refuse.  Something they really want and that offers amazing value, usually for free or a very low cost.

Combine that with an opt in form.

They must opt in before they get the offer!

This puts them into your email list and once they have confirmed they want to be there, they get whatever amazing offer you dangled in front of them.

Putting new leads into your list that you can market to later.

Step 3:  Autorepsonders

These automated email messages will change your business!

I remember sending each email by hand to all the people I thought might be interested in my business. It took me AGES!  Then I had to go back and do it all over again the next day.

With autoresponders, you put your email efforts on autopilot!

You write messages once and each person that opt ins to your list gets that message on a pre-determined day.

For example:
Sally opt ins and immediately gets your first message which is a welcome and an introduction to who you are and how you are going to help her get the results she is looking for.

Then on her second day in your list, the autoresponder service sends her the next message in your series.  A helpful message about a tool or service that has changed your business.  You tell her how it works and then give her a link to check it out for herself.

On her 5th day in your list, she gets another pre-written message and so on.

Meanwhile, Tom has opted in as well.  It’s his first day so he gets that same welcome message Sally did on her first day but it is personalized with his name instead of Sally’s.

And on it goes.

Every person that gets on your list gets the right message on the right day according the schedule you have set up in the autoresponder service.  And they get them without you having to lift a finger!  Oh YEAH!

Step 4:  Affiliate Products, Services, Tools and Training

Earlier I mentioned a message that Sally was going to get about a product or service you liked to use in your business with a link to check it out.

Pay close attention because this is where the cash comes in…

That link takes Sally to YOUR personalized url for that product or service.  When she buys it, you get a commission from that sale!

This is called affiliate marketing and it is a brilliant way for you to make money on the people who will never join your business.

The trick is finding the right products to promote and finding the right words to promote them.

First, I want to mention that this is not about “selling” something.  This is about helping others find tools that will help them get what they want- a profitable online MLM business.

Always think give before you get and the “selling” will come naturally.

How do I use this tool to build my list?
How does this service help the people on my list?
What are the biggest wants, needs and fears of my list members?
What do I use or could recommend that would help them get past those issues?

Write your autoresponder emails as a series of helpful messages with the links to your personal affiliate links built in.  If a person is interested in getting the same results you have with a certain product or service, they will click the link to check it out themselves.  Then they are ‘selling themselves’ instead of you pitching and selling to them.  Big difference!

There are some really cool benefits to this besides just the cash – and that is really cool!

Another is the fact that while someone learns more about you and what you offer through your messages you are also training them before they join your business.  You are teaching them to use the products and services you will have them use if they do join you.  And again, it’s all automated!

Choosing the right products to promote really depends on your niche and what they need.  Always think of them first and product second.

Avoid too many products.  That will only confuse your list members.  Stick to things that you know and use so that you can give real results and good how to’s in your messages.

Step 5:  Marketing

Once all of that is set up, you are ready to start driving traffic to your Nerve Center and into your sales funnel.  And that is the easy part!

That way, every penny or minute you spend marketing your business won’t be lost if a person doesn’t join your primary business.  Every new contact on your list becomes a potential lead not just for your primary business but for all the products, services and training in your sales funnel.

Now, I know some of us are further ahead than others when it comes to the business but in most cases, we are all pretty clueless when we joined our MLM.

I saw the question asked by the guy who is in Amway and you advised him to work on branding himself first. I just started new in Amway and also the education system Network 21. I need your help and expertise how to start step by step (consider me MLM for dummies) and grow a successful and profitable business. How to set myself on internet and attract traffic, prospects so I can sponsor or have more customers. I was reading a lot of stuff from magnetic sponsoring and Adam Taha e-book on twitter and blog. I need your help!!!

So first let me say -Hey Richard- Thanks for the question!

You are not alone out there with this one.  I get people asking me all the time how they get started branding themselves online.

Step 1- Get a MLM Nerve Center. It will become the home or hub of everything you do in your business.  A place where every bit of traffic, every marketing strategy lead and interested person will come to learn more about you and what you offer.  Use it to build a sales funnel with autoresponders and affiliate commissions built in for products and services you love to use in your business.

Step 2-  Learn how to use your Nerve Center. With the right training, you can have your nerve center at the top of the search engines for free creating endless leads and traffic for you at little to no cost.

Step 3- Get a plan. This is really important!  If you have 6 hours a week to dedicate to your business then you need to spend all 6 hours doing things that are going to put money in your pocket in the long run.  Busy work is out- being in income producing mode is in! Know what you are going to do before you sit down to work and you will get more done.

Also, know what you are willing to spend marketing your business.  If you are broke, then concentrate on free marketing methods.  If you have some cash to spend, invest it wisely on traffic generation techniques that will generate leads for you long term first.  Then when those are working for you, spend more money on PPC and ezine advertising.

Step 4- Put your plan into action! I guess this ties in with the last but you get my point.  You will only reap the rewards of your efforts if you get started today.  Not tomorrow, not after you learn a bit more, TODAY!

Step 5- Continue learning.  Every time you learn something new, blog about it.  Keep learning and sharing with others.  Interact with other leaders, ask questions and then spread that around to others.  If you give before you get, you will always get more in the end!

Step 6 – Repeat! When you get someone interested in your business and your leadership, show them that they can have the same things you do with some work and the willingness to be the student.
