The other day I was talking to a friend and partner of mine about our businesses and how exciting it was to have a team growing in so many countries.  We started to formulate a plan to take an around the world trip to meet our team members face to face and celebrate their success as well as our own.

And suddenly he said to me, “You know Erica, with the team you have now, the sun literally never sets on your business.  Someone is always making you money.”

When I got off the phone I thought more about what he had said.

What a powerful thing to have working for you.  A money making machine that is duplicating itself over and over again continuously around the world even when you are fast asleep.  As one city raps up their day another is just getting started.

Kind of like a tag team wrestling match!  One team member gets tired and the other steps in to take over!

And what it means in dollars and cents is our business is based on real leverage and the best way to earn a significant residual income.

Now I have to admit this did not happen overnight. It took me a lot of time, money and patience to get my business to this point.  But it did happen and now it can’t be stopped!

By combining the right systems and a business plan that is easy to duplicate with a global business that anyone can and will want to use (no matter what their passion or profession is) we have created a residual stream of income that will only grow as it is introduced into even more cities and countries around the world.

And the best part is (not that the money isn’t great!!!) that I get to use what I have learned and struggled to get right to help others do the exact same thing – in a fraction of the time.  That is really what makes this powerful.

The growth of my business depends on the success of others.  That is why I am so driven to help them reach their goals in the shortest time possible.  Very win win for everyone!

I get to share what has worked best for me and they get my mentorship and 5 + years of experience built into their brand new business opportunity.  (Which costs them less than $200 to get started!)

So here is a quick thank you to all the team members we have scattered around the globe.  New Zealand, Canada, coast to coast across The United States, India, Cameroon, South Africa, The UK, Nigeria…  we can’t thank you enough for your hard work and dedication.

My Mom is extremely creative and has a real gift with a sewing machine.

Growing up she used to make almost everything my sister and I wore.  It was fantastic to have something that was totally mine and completely unique.  No one else at school had clothes nearly as nice as mine.

So when I got older I begged her to show me how to sew.

This was her reply to my plea…
“I would love to teach you and I can show you everything I know but first, I want you rip out this seam out for me.”

She handed me a tiny little tool (her favorite seam ripper) and the largest piece of material I had ever seen. It was a huge quilted baby blanket (a gift for my cousin-to-be’s baby shower that weekend) and the lining had gotten caught and twisted underneath it.

As she pointed out the mistake and told me to be careful, Mom must have noticed the disheartened expression on my face.  She walked off to help my sister with some homework and said, “If you’re not willing to use the seam ripper, then you will never really learn to sew.”

I made a disgruntled shoulder shrug and sat there for a minute pouting to no one.  When I realized she wasn’t coming back to help me and she was serious, I went to work. (Child labor laws are in place because of this kind of thing right??)

2 hours later, dragging the blanket (now in 2 pieces) behind me, I strolled into the kitchen to proudly show her my work.

“Well done! Let’s go finish this blanket and make you a new skirt for the baby shower.”

Mom knew that in order for me to create something great, I needed to know that it was OK to make mistakes but that I would have to find a way to correct them.

The same goes for your business and life in general.

If you want to create something unique and wonderful, you need to be willing to fail, have the patience to figure out what went wrong and have the desire to get it right when you try again.

Be willing to use your own seam ripper or you will never know what amazing things you can create.

And just as a little side note:
Whenever I am home for a visit, my Mom and I spend the majority of our time in her sewing room, eating whatever junk food she has laying around (there is never a shortage of it!) and making new creations together.   So I guess that little seam ripper did more than teach me some important life lessons, it gave my Mom and I another wonderful excuse to spend time together.
This is making me miss her… got to go and call home…

My Mom would be the first to tell you that as a kid I had an excuse for EVERYTHING!  Nothing was ever my fault and unfortunately I carried that habit with me to adulthood.   (Not that I really consider myself an adult- overgrown kid at best!)  But back to my bad habit…

When something didn’t get done or I had trouble with it, I always had an excuse.  There was always something in my way that kept me from getting the results I wanted.  Some outside force that caused my issue.

Boy was I wrong!

The only thing getting in my way was me.  And I was doing a really good job of it.

But the other day after reading a book about Winning Habits I realized what I was doing…

I was trading in my success and desired results for excuses.

When I looked back at the challenges that I thought were holding me back I found that if I had worked a little harder or looked for alternatives, I would have gotten it done.

So no more!  I came up with a really simple 2 step solution to this problem.

I talk endlessly (even I know I do it) about how we are all very alike in this industry.  That the things you are feeling and going through are shared with almost all of us.  This post I think proves that.

Today’s question is from John.  He is a reader and has become a friend over the past couple months.  His feelings are definitely not unique.

What John is dealing with is in all of us and to be successful you need to find a way around it – quickly!

Here is John’s question…

Hey Erica, I am hoping you might be able to shed some light on my issue.  I think my short attention span is KILLING my home business.  I feel overwhelmed especially when I am asked to do something new.  I know there is a lot to learn but I can’t make it through a video or how a couple pages of a “How to guide” without getting a panicky feeling that I’ll never get this.  If I can’t learn new skills how will I ever be able to do this?

Learning new skills is never easy for anyone.  If it was we’d all be rocket scientists or brain surgeons.

But learning new things is a huge part of this business.  No one starts off knowing everything they need to be a industry leader or develop the biggest downline in their company.

We all need to start somewhere so here’s a few pointers to help you master your mind…

One thing at a time. You don’t need to learn everything at once.  Try to master one skill and then put that into practice.  After you get that to work, try the next.  Take everything in stride.

Too many people try too many things and never get good at anything.  They spread themselves too thin and have their fingers in too many pots.

This really holds them back from the success they want.

If you master even one skill that other people are interested in, then as an expert, people will beg you for answers and when you help them you become a leader they trust.

Set achievable goals. When you are learning to master these new skills set real goals for yourself that you know you can achieve.  They need to challenge you but should never overwhelm you.

Take a realistic look at your schedule-

If you have 7 hours a day to work your business then put together a plan that keeps you in income producing activities for that time.  If you only have 7 hours a week well then plan accordingly.

If you sit down each day with a plan, you will get more done, be better organized and won’t feel so anxious.

Reward yourself. Each time you complete a task reward yourself with something that you love.  A little “me time” or incentive goes a long way towards being happy and productive in your working environment.

Take a break. As many as you need.  Just get up from the computer and go for a walk.  Then when you come back, be ready to focus.  You’ll find that after awhile you won’t need as many and you get more done.

Train your brain. Repetition in your schedule trains the brain as to when it’s time to get to work on certain tasks.  So if one of the things you want to do for your business is write blog posts, do them at the same time everyday.  Your brain will know when it’s time to be creative and will flow into the work more effortlessly.

Start with the end in mind. Know what you are working for.  Keep a clear picture in your head of what you are getting out of the skill you are learning.  This helps you stay focused on the end instead of getting bogged down in the middle.

Get in the right frame of mind. Many people believe that starting any work for your business should begin with some personal development.  Getting into a positive place mentally before you jump into a new task will go a long way to helping you learn.

Get some exercise. Being active puts less stress on your body and mind.  Treat your body like a temple- not a tent!  That means staying away from the caffeine and sugary foods too.

Having a short attention span doesn’t need to kill your business.  You can get a lot done in a small amount of time if you are clear and focused on what you want and when you want to have it.

So, take a minute to think and think hard about the things you allow into your head everyday.  Make room for the positive and push out the negative.
