Video marketing is the hottest way to get your message and your brand out to the masses but for a lot of marketers, it scares them to death.
If you’re camera shy but still want to take advantage of video marketing here are a few tips to help get you past this fear and still take advantage the this amazing marketing technique.
Screen Capture
By using your computer screen as the ‘face’ behind the lens you avoid looking into the camera yourself. This technique is perfect if you are doing a how to or instructional video. You can even put together a power point with slides to do the “talking for you”.
What is screen capture? Basically, it is a software program that you download to your computer and when it is activated whatever is happening on your computer screen is recorded as a video.
There are a lot of versions of screen capture software available. They range from $100′s of dollars to free.
Camtasia is one of the best available- but you will pay for it.
JingProject is free but has limited sharing features. There is an upgraded version of Jing which will give you a lot more options for a very low price.
Before you buy or download any software, be sure to check your system requirements. PC or Mac, operating systems, etc. The features vary with different versions of the same program so before you invest, be sure that it has all the options you need it to.
20/20 Interview Style
Channel your inner Barbara Walters! Sit across from your interviewer and have a conversation. Record your video with you looking off camera at your interviewer. Enroll a friend, family member or business partner to help you. They can be off camera (or on) and ask you questions.
This technique allows you to still be on the screen but takes some of the fear away because you aren’t speaking directly into the camera. You’re just having a chat with someone else while the video camera is rolling.
Full Disclosure
Nothing makes people like you more than when you are honest and a bit vulnerable.
Look straight at the camera and say-
“Look, I am not comfortable doing this and you won’t see me back here often but this message was so important that I had to get in front of you and get it out.”
When you let people know that you are new to this or uncomfortable they will empathize with you. This makes you a real person and someone they can relate to.
Draw it Out!
If you are nervous about looking straight at the camera don’t!
Use a whiteboard, large chalkboard, easel or even a piece of paper and illustrate your message. Back the camera up so that you don’t feel uncomfortable and concentrate on getting your message across using images and words.
For something a little more high tech there is a Bamboo Pad.
This neat little tool lets you draw on your computer just like you were writing a note on paper. It is a writing tablet that is hooked up to your computer through a USB port. As you draw on the tablet with the pen that comes with it, your art work shows up on your screen.
It does a whole lot of other nifty stuff too, but it is a perfect tool for the camera shy video marketer.
Plus, you can get one for less than $150.
Slideshow Time!
There are some fantastic tools and services that will take images/ photos, combine them with audio and turn them into a video.
These are especially good for videos of your latest business conference, your family vacation, quick attention getting promos and all kinds of other stuff.
Check out our Adventures Page- we have a bunch of these on there.
The tool we used to create those is Animoto.
This is perfect for anyone that wants to have professional looking videos without having to ‘shoot’ them with a webcam or video camera. You can pre-record audio, load it in with your choice of pictures and the site does the rest. You can also just use text and images with background music. And if you don’t like it, press a button and the site will make you a new one.
Another service that does this is Traffic Geyser. Again, you upload images and your pre-recorded podcast and the website churns out a professional quality video for you to share with the world. (Traffic Geyser does a lot more than that- it is also the ultimate submission tool online. I get front page Google listings all the time using this little gem!)
There are tons of ways to use video in your marketing efforts without having to feel uncomfortable.
If you’re camera shy use any of the above tips and get started. Now that you’ve read this- you have no more excuses!
